As you reflect on the sources you have read, consider when in your research process your initial views on the subject began to change.
You might organize the middle section by the insights you gained from your reading. These insights might include spots where your sources led you "off track." When we are researching the question, "Are dogs carnivores?" for example, we might be led by our reading to a section or paragraph that surprises us--perhaps because we learn something we didn't expect to find there. Once I came across a long explanation of evolution as adaptation, not as mutation, in an article about the digestive system of dogs, for example.
Are there spots where you have uncovered interesting connections, unexpected twists, paths that lead you "off the track?"

There were moments when I felt that the articles I found did not answer my specific question. Although they were very general, they did concur with my existing beliefs. Which is that students living on campus are more in touch with academics.
ReplyDeleteOne of my articles explained some of the negative distractions a person has when living off campus, but now I want to know what happens when the environment is too comfortable at home or in a dorm. Do those students who live in an ideal environment still perfom better than those that don't?
There were moments when i was reading through my sources and thinking about them, that more questions would pop into my head and i would get of track and began to look up other questions. Then instead of getting of track i began to write them down for later on.
ReplyDeleteAs i was looking for research i found more on how its harder for single mothers to make it in todays society. I want to show the pros and cons on raising children with 2 or 1 parent. i have found alot of personal journals on how people felt. maybe i can interview a single mother who has raised a child and a maried couple who has raised a child. Im doing fairly well on this essay.
ReplyDeleteIt is funny because my sources actually helped lead me to my final puzzling question or idea. In the beginning I was researching single mothers and fathers. Then I started to notice a trend of articles I was viewing and it led me to turn in another direction. I already had my own beliefs on the subject I was interested in but my research allowed me to rethink and focus on a much more less broad topic of study. This has really helped me to "zero" in my topic of research.
ReplyDeleteDonnesha,
ReplyDeleteFrom my personal experience as a student living off campus I can share that on a very big campus living off campus sometimes requires that you find roommates quickly--to not be stuck paying rent when they disappear. This can create problems when you take in someone you just met and don't know well.
I lived on North Campus in Ann Arbor in an apartment with a woman I didn't know. I was single and she was divorced with two kids. I often got stuck with the small children when she was hung over and wouldn't get up in the morning. In addition, she has some very strange habits and ended up ruining a lot of my stuff.
There are apartment buildings now, I understand, that make a mini-lease for each person in the apartment so that kind of thing won't happen anymore.
What I'm trying to say is that off-campus life doesn't always guarantee that you won't get stuck with the roommate from hell, like you might in a dorm.
Where I was, most graduate students, unless they live in married housing, did live in apartments or shared situations off campus.
You might also consider the academic success of students who live in sororities or fraternities.
Why don't you take a look at some of the ads for sublets or renting places in Mt. Pleasant and do a little primary research on the kinds of problems you can guess have happened to the people who are looking to share an apartment with someone?
Ashlie,
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good way to proceed:
"Then instead of getting of track i began to write them down for later on."
Mike,
ReplyDeleteI can sense the intellectual energy in your description of your reading below:
" . . .my research allowed me to rethink and focus on a much more less broad topic of study. This has really helped me to "zero" in my topic of research."
Offlimits:
ReplyDeleteThe following is a great idea:
" . . .maybe i can interview a single mother who has raised a child and a maried couple who has raised a child. Im doing fairly well on this essay."
What kinds of questions would you be wanting them to respond to in the interview?
Consider also asking each mother how she feels about mothers who take the different path. For example, you could ask the married mother to describe the advantages she sees in her situation as opposed to a single mother and vice-versa.
Have you thought about looking into the difference between single mothers who choose to raise their children alone and mothers who did not choose that from the start?
I am not sure how much material from my sources I have to put into my essay compared to my own thoughts and ideas. Which is more important? So far I got alot more infromation from my sources. Is that ok? Does anyone know?
ReplyDeleteAs i looked for my articles pertaining the numbers and percentage of drop out in the Flint Public School district, I came upon a article that was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe artical was about schools of the Flint Public School district true enough, but what was being disscussed in the artical was something unbelevible. They are closing eight scholls with in the district and that includes one high school whitch is Flint Central High school and seven elementry schools all over the Flint area.
This was a big shock to me because I can't even imagine with what all those teachers and students and parents are going to do. This is going to be a hard job for the Fint Board of education in the long run.
my articles help me with the questions big time. they helped me answer some of my questions but not all of them. the questions that didnt get answered probably cant be answered because they need to be addressed to OSHA themselves. i think there could be a lot more done about OSHA and my essay should explain some of why and how. At least there is a company that is trying to help us workers.
ReplyDeleteI have thought about that.(mothers who choose to be a single mother) I wanted to add that into my paper, but i felt i was geting off topic, so i decided i would leave that out. That could be a new topic for my next essay.
ReplyDeleteNow that i know i can interview single mothers and married mothers i would like to add that into my paper for essay 3 draft 3.
Thank you for your feed back it is very usefull
Thank you Dr. Tobias for the feedback. I actually remember seeing an article about students living in sorority and fraternity houses. That would have been my next question to see; what are the pros or cons of living in that housing. I have always thought of frat houses as party houses where you have no privacy, so I would really like to get a first hand look into the lives of the greeks. Maybe I might conduct an interview to see what it is like living in a fraternity or sorority house.
ReplyDeleteI also think that apartment living is actually harder than living in the dorms. You have to cook for yourself, and if you don't have a roomate or friend that frequents the house, you are always alone.
Sorry to hear about you're situation, but that will help me in the future if I decide to move off-campus.
I have read many different articles that agree with me about the courts not taking domestic violence serious enough. Then I come across some that talk about it but dont give an opinion about the courts position on domestic cases. Some sources where very bias others were not open with the subject at all.It was all kind of like a run around.
ReplyDeleteThis information allowed me to think more of my puzzling question. I't helped me cover my idea of how to present the body of my essay 3 when going into transition to the body of my essay 3. Even though im still thinking about swithcing my research Idea towards more to education.
ReplyDeleteas i was looking for the resarch on teen mothers the articles that i got help me alot about tenn mothers i feel that i can do alot on this resarch paper.
ReplyDeleteWhen I started researching my paper tere were hundreds of articles I had to sift thru to find what i was looking for I started just
ReplyDeletelooking
for articles about working mothers had to narrow my search to accomadations made for working mothers.
It seems to me that finding good articles for my paper is harder than I imagined it would be. There is a lot of information out there about the importance of school but there is less about the stress of school and its impacts.
