The Cover Letter that introduces the contents of your portfolio should give evidence of your work and participation in these major course requirements:
--You have improved your revision skills
--You have grown in some way as a writer
--You can give an overview of the course as you experienced it
--You can assess what was useful to you and what was not useful
--You are aware of your strengths and weaknesses as a writer
--You can make a grade recommendation for the course
The question here is: What evidence are you going to use to support your grade recommendation in each of the above areas?

hey
ReplyDeleteYour instructor says:
ReplyDeleteIf I were many of my students, I would submit the first and last drafts of Essay 2 to show improvement in my revision skills. I would submit along with these two drafts my reflection statement, especially the one after the portfolio conference, where the instructor and I discussed an early draft of Essay 2.
To show that I had grown in some way as a writer, I might include an early journal entry, perhaps one where I expressed fear or negativity about a writing course and then I might point to my showcased piece. The fact that I am proud of something I wrote now shows growth.
Another way to show growth might be to write about the change in a view I had when I started the semester, for example, my view about giving other students feedback on their writing . . . and to tell how I came to change that view . . .
To show that I'm aware of strengths and weaknesses, I might include feedback on my work from both students and instructors and elaborate on what they said . . .
I'm hoping this helps those of you who might be struggling . . . I'm also hoping you realize that the best judge of what to include in your portfolio is you.
I dont know what to submit for my portfolio. I love my first essay because i feel it came from my heart. I want to show improvement with my writing but i dont think i did so well on essay 2. I have not recieved any feed back from essay 2 so i dont know if it is a good peice that my audience enjoyed reading. I hope i can show that my organization has got better and how i use my words has improved as well.
ReplyDeleteoff limits:
ReplyDeleteYour first essay was from the heart, if you are who I think you are. That could be your showcase piece. There are many different reasons why students might choose one piece over another to showcase.
The second draft of your essay 2 did show much improvement over the first draft of that essay. You might use these drafts to show that you grasped the concept of revision and that you are more aware of the needs of your audience now. You yourself have identified already two areas of improvement: organization and word choice. How did you get better at those skills? Try to back track to show activities that helped you, whether these were in-class or out of class.
I am going to summit my Essay #2 as my show piece. It show coherence and structure. My essay # 1 Draft1 and draft 2 will show revision growth. And my journal pages will show how I learned from the exercises we practiced
ReplyDeleteI want to use my essay 1, showing in what way I impoved my revision skills and this is also my favourite piece and what I am most proud of. My journal entries will be evidence of how I improved as a writer and also count as the things I liked the most about this course.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know if we have to submit essay 3? can we do essay 1 and 2 instead?
I think in order to show how my revision skill have improved im going to post my first draft of essay one and then my finished polished copy to have something to compare it to, i am going to use essay three's first and final copy. I want to show how i have moved from just writing and taking notes to thinking further into situation and pulling useful information from them, to do this i think i am going to put in a journal entry from the begging weeks and one from the ending weeks to base it off of. As a writer i think i require to much approvment from the instructor and those around me who read my writing, even tho over this semester i have begun to improve that.
ReplyDeleteI am going to submit all three essays. I am submitting the first one because it is a tribute and it's really close to the heart. I think it's cool because I have never done one before. I am submitting the second one because it kind of goes with the first and it also shows how I revised the writing from one draft to the next. Essay 3 I think has to be in there so that's the reason for that one. I really can't get into groove of writing this essay 3. I don't know if its just the fact the I'm just not sure on how to start it and I really need some help with it, or if it's just because school is almost over and I'm ready for it to be over. I think it's just I don't and can't even figure out out to start it or begin.
ReplyDeleteIn order to show how my revision skils have improved I am going to exhibit the work in essay 1, 2 and 3. I think each of them shows how my work has improved in revision over the time I have been in this class.Going threw essay 1,2 , and 3 also shows how I have grown in a lot of ways as a writer. My cover letter is going to explain how I have developed into a better writer.I'm going to give examples of my improvement and show how over time I have grown.
ReplyDeleteI think I will like to use my essay 1 becasue it was more of a narrative writing about how things went a turn in my life. I would probaly use my journal entries to show my improvement of my writings as well.
ReplyDeletei feel while i was writing my cover letter my attudie change about writing alot. i would submit my essay 2 becasue my essay 3 is coving my feelings towards teen mothers.
ReplyDeleteAs I stand so far I think I will at least submit essay 1. It seems to me to be one of my better writings of the three. But when I am finished with essay 3 I may like that one as well. We shall see.
ReplyDeleteI plan on imputing what I learned and my goals as a writer in the future.
ReplyDeleteI plan to imput tools I learned as a writer and the goals I set as a future writer.
ReplyDeleteI also would like to include essay 2 I feel really strong about the topic.
